Retro Space-Age Modernism

by on July 17, 2007

After work and decompression time (aka. jogging and eating a very late dinner), I went straight to my sketchbooks. No time for trivialities, I needed some time alone immersed in my art.

Right now, one of the recurring themes in my artwork is modernism. I’ve been going nuts over clean spaces, strong lines and organized colours. Pair that with futuristic fantasy, and you’ve got some wild outfits. I recently saw this pic of futurist fashion from 1968, and never looked back..

..I love the idea of life in the future.. To design something with this in mind means reinventing the concept of fashion. What new technology will there be? Why will people wear clothing? What will be considered prestigious or luxurious? It’s a great excuse to let one’s imagination run wild. Add in loads of retro glam (like those wild metallic boots!) and I’m an instant convert.

This pic inspired a good 10 outfits or so.. Leather catsuits, mech wings, robotic boots, you name it. While I’m not crazy about the woven belt, I like the belt buckles and everything else about the outfit. By the way, what’s going on with the hat? I can’t figure it out.

This outfit was designed by Pierre Cardin. As a testament to his flair for style, is still a feasible look today. Low heeled go-go boots made an appearance last winter and never really left the scene (though I have yet to see any metallic ones). I would switch the braided belt for something different – braided belts are unfortunate. Something plain with big buckles would look a lot better. As for the minidress, well, what woman in her right mind would be caught without a little black dress? You could easily pick one up at Zara or Le Chateau for cheap (and many other places for significantly more than cheap).

Anyway, a lesson to be learned from this is that we are influenced by couture and high fashion more than we tend to think. In fact, I bet you could put together something resembling this outfit using only Brown’s, Aldo, and Le Chateau. Throw in a wildly modernist accesory, and it’s back to the future for you. Well, the idealized retro-glam future. Over and out!
