Yves St. Laurent Leather Jacket

by on March 2, 2008

Flipping through the pages of one of my favourite magazines – Flaunt – I came upon this outfit in one of the photo shoot sections. Wow…. stunning jacket!!!

First of all, look at the colour of that. Cobalt blue – long the colour of royalty and that modern artist who made all those blue objects (time for someone to brush up on his modern art history). Next, check out the pattern! It looks to be stitched right into the leather! Intense. Once I got over my fascination with the photo and the garment itself, I read the caption and learned that .. The layer beneath the jacket is a SHEATH DRESS! Wild! I didn’t think the outfit could have got any better – well, this is what a great outfit is all about (at this high-end level, anyway). Amazing finishing, considerable artisty and a very distinct, definite “look” when you put it on and strut your stuff.

I have long been a fan of fashion houses as distinguished as Yves, and it is moments like this that reaffirm everything they stand for. Sometimes, these very high-end and established lines can alienate the peons in their attempts at couture. I can understand most people being somewhat intimidated by the world of High Fashion/Haute Couture, but when even their collections become so obviously high-end that even would-be fashionistas get scared away, it’s time to revamp and get back down to basics. I think this jacket is part of a very cool collection that, while still very high-brow and definitely Yves to the core, is also artistic and thoughtful. Wickeddd. Over and out!
